Spacers come in all sizes (heights) and perform many various functions in framing.
The most basic function deals with keeping the glass from touching the art.

This pic shows some of the spacers up close.

Spacers also can be used to add "dimension" to your presentation by creating space between your backboard & glass allowing the art to be raised.

The pics below show artwork that is being raised with 2 sheets of 3/16" foam board.
